WWW (World Wide Web)

The World Wide Web is the name given to everything on the Internet that you can access
via a web browser. The Web was developed in 1989 by a graduate of the Oxford University,
England called Tim Berners-Lee. Tim created an internet-based hypermedia for global
information sharing.
According to Dick Oliver, the World Wide Web or Web consists of Internet computers that
provide services which, allow an easy to use system for finding information and moving among
resources. WWW services feature hypertext and multimedia information, which can be explored
through a web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. (Oliver. D., 2001) The web has revolutionized the world by allowing us to do things such as, email, chat, online
transactions, online shopping, advertising etc. all at the click of a button. The web has grown
at an exponential rate and with this, it's facilities and resources have followed.

Internet

The Internet is the name that was given to a network of computers that was first formed in the
USA in 1969. The initial purpose for the creation of the Internet was for military use. The
Internet is a large network of computers that are linked to computers all over the world. The
Internet consists of home users, businesses, universities research institutions and basically
any organisation or person who wants to share and exchange information over this network.
Each of these computers are connected via phone lines, fibre optics, satellites, twisted pair
coaxial cable and wireless connections. Modems are used to turn the digital signal into an
analogue signal (and vice versa), therefore allowing data to be passed along the phone lines.
The Internet is a tool that has made it possible to provide a mass of intellectual resources
for people all over the world to use.

Relationship between the Internet & WWW

The Internet and World Wide Web are not the same entity, but together they make it possible to
share massive amounts of information and communicate with millions of people all over the
world. The Internet is the network of computers all over the world that the web resides on.
The web is a tool that allows you to access pages on the net.
